Trigger Point Therapy by Our York Chiropractor
If you have been experiencing ongoing aches, pains and tenderness in any of the muscles in your body, the experienced York chiropractor at AquaMassage & Chiropractic Center in York, PA, provides trigger point therapy services that can help. Whenever muscles are in pain, they spasm to at least some degree. These spasms are a defense mechanism that is designed to protect the muscles from further damage. Unfortunately, they can also be quite painful. After a muscle has been strained or otherwise injured, myofascial trigger points, which are usually referred to simply as trigger points, or TPs, may develop. These trigger points may remain in the muscles for years, causing chronic pain that can vary significantly in intensity.
What Causes Trigger Points to Develop?
Trigger points develop after muscles have been injured. Muscle injuries are called strains, and they occur due to overuse or trauma to the area. People who are largely sedentary or who tend to be anxious are often more susceptible to developing them, but they can happen to anyone.
What are the Effects of Trigger Points?
Following an injury, adhesions may develop in a muscle. Sometimes, they develop into trigger points, or small areas that cause chronic stiffness and pain. Contrary to popular belief, a trigger point is not scar tissue. Rather, it is an area of increased sensitivity. While it causes pain in the exact spot where it is located, it also causes referred pain. In other words, if pressure is applied directly to a trigger point, pain may be felt in a more distant part of the body. In this way, trigger points can affect the body in a number of ways, which is why they are especially troubling.
Symptoms of a Trigger Point
The pain that is caused by a trigger point is usually described as heavy and dull or gripping and burning. In some cases, trigger points may cause neurological issues as well, including the sensation of pins and needles in the hands and other extremities. The primary symptom of a trigger point is chronic pain in a specific muscle that never quite seems to go away.
Trigger Point Therapy from Our York Chiropractor
AquaMassage & Chiropractic Center provides York chiropractic care for the treatment of trigger points. Our York chiropractor offers trigger point therapy, which involves applying direct pressure to each trigger point with a thumb or finger and following up with massage. Our practice also offers spray-stretch therapy, which involves spraying a cooling agent onto the affected area and then stretching it to alleviate pressure and to eliminate the trigger point. Some patients have better luck with dry needling, which we also offer as a form of treatment for trigger points. With this option, very fine needles--typically acupuncture needles--are inserted into the center of each trigger point. The muscle usually twitches a little, and most people experience a very mild, dull ache. The needle is usually kept in place for 1 to 10 minutes, depending on the severity of the trigger point.
